Today In my First year seminar we had an EOTO, each one teach one, where A group of students resecherd and presented on an event that helped race relations, and an even that hurt race relations.
An event that hurt the race relations in America was the compromise of 1877. This was an informal and unwritten deal that settled the intensely disputed 1876 U.S. presidential election. It resulted in the United States federal government pulling the last troops out of the south, this also formally ended the reconstruction era of America. Also a result of the compromise is that Florida, South Carolina and Louisiana became democratic again.
Another topic my peers spoke about that was hurtful to the race relations was the Wilmington insurrection of 1898. This was a politically motivated attack by whites against the city leading African American citizens. This race riot showed how far the southern white democrats would go too to regain their political power. This lead to violence throughout the town.
An event that helped the race relations was the civil rights act of 1875. This doc
