I believe that Justice Harlan’s opinion to disagree with the majority opinion was correct. In 1896 race was one of the most controversial topics, Justice harlan wrote this dissent in hopes to change the public's opinion over the matter and make them see what was right. In justice Harlan's dissent he says “ I think permit any public authority to know the race of those those entitled to be protected in the enjoyment of such rights.”(Cite 1) With this he argues that the whites have power over the blacks and they don't want to lose that power. This shows that he doesn't approve of the whites taking advantage of the laws. He wanted to make everyone have equal rights and not have the races separated. He also argued that the laws created via the plessy case were unconstitutional due to the 14th amendment stating they should deny no one within their jurisdiction the equal protection of laws.
