In my First Year seminar, FYS, we had to do a much trial of the case State vs Mann. This case took place in North Carolina in 1830. This case determined if the supreme court of North Carolina ruled that slave owners have full control of there slaves and wouldn't be prosecuted for afflicting harm on their slaves. It began when A slave named Lydia trued running away. Her owner shot her in the back when she ran away. He was charged with assault and battery but he appealed saying that he couldn't be prosecuted because he was the owner of the slave making her property. Overall both sides presented a good discussion and learned a lot form the mock trial.
